Excideuil Small City of Character
On the banks of the river Loue, between Isle and Auvézère on the route of iron between Saint Yrieix la Perche and Périgueux, come and stroll in the streets of Excideuil, this medieval city dating back at least 1500 years.
The traditional market takes place every Thursday morning, with premium markets for foie gras and truffles in winter.
Excideuil has good amenities, supermarkets, pharmacy, bakery and butchers. There is also a bike hire shop in town.
Grotte de Tourtoirac Cave
The Tourtoirac cave, the most recent cave open to the public, is accessible to everyone, and it offers visits with multilingual guides or visits that are translated by audioguides provided with a magnetic loop and audio description.
This is one of the few caves that is accessible to those of reduced mobility. there is wheelchair and pushchair access to the whole site.
Les forges de Savignac-Lédrier
The waters of the Auvézère river have supplied and still supply some rural Périgord industries such as mills and forges.
It is in Savignac-Lédrier , not far from Excideuil, that we invite you to immerse yourself in the industrial heritage of this sumptuous region of the Auvézère gorges. The Forges de Savignac Lédrier bear witness to a time when this part of Périgord was flourishing with industry
Château de Hautefort
Located on a rocky outcrop, the Château de Hautefort is an old medieval fortress transformed in the 17th century by the marquis of the name into a pleasure residence.
Embellished in particular by the addition in the 19th century of a French garden and a landscaped park, it is a unique site in Périgord which combines the splendor of nature and the majesty of architecture.
This place steeped in history, preserved and restored by its various owners for over a millennium, can still be visited today.

La grotte de Lascaux
The original decorated cave is closed to the public since 1963 in order to preserve these exceptionally rare works.
However, the International Center for Cave Art Lascaux IV offers a faithful reproduction. The bull room will impress young and old, open your eyes wide, you will find a prehistoric sign, a painting, an engraving… No less than 357 horses will be presented to you and even 1 human representation!
Extremely rare representation in prehistoric art.
Sarlat-la-Canéda
Town of Art and History
The old town, dating from both medieval and renaissance times is a pleasure to visit, especially during the spring and autumn, or early in the morning. If you can catch the early morning sunshine on the yellow sandstone buildings, so much the better.
Sarlat is a gastronomic centre, the region being well known particularly for foie gras and truffles. Plenty of shops offer the chance to stock up on these and often offer tasting sessions too. Be sure to look in the indoor market too. The displays are wonderful.
Market day in Sarlat is Saturday and Wednesday.
Périgueux
Capital of the Périgord, Périgueux is a City of Art and History possessing an important historic heritage, with its ancient Gallo-Roman town and its medieval and Renaissance old town. Situated on the Way of St James the Saint-Front cathedral of Byzantine style is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Périgord museum offers visitors prehistoric, Gallo-Roman, medieval and Renaissance collections, but also its section dedicated to Fine art. The markets in the old town are authentic and bursting with local produce that will delight fine food fans.
